Default Searching high and low for a 96 CPS

Hey everyone. I've been through about 4 CPS's trying to find one that will work, and so far I've had no luck. The ones from Carquest/NAPA/Advance have really weak magnets but have the right connector. The dealer has 3 kinds: 2 of them would definitely not fit, and the 3rd fits if you give it the slightest sanding on the edges. 3rd one looks like this:

http://www.1aauto.com/crankshaft-pos...FYmPHwodTVAAyA

They said they looked it up based on my VIN and that one should fit. I sanded the edges a little and it fit, but when I started it I had all kinds of misfires and backfires. So that one won't work.

I need someones help in sourcing one with a plug that looks like this:

http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/sk...EPJ311802.html

The reason I don't buy that one is because I don't know the quality of it since it doesn't have a brand and I can't physically test the magnet, plus looking up the part number for it elsewhere shows its for 97 and newer.. Right now I have a 97 CPS on my 96 XJ, but it doesn't work completely. The car starts and idles fine, but at 1500RPM+ it'll start backfiring. The original one that came with my jeep when I bought it makes it sometimes die at idle, but when it's going, it goes. Can anyone help me find one that's quality that will work? I'm out of options besides going to a yard and maybe finding a 96 with the same CPS. Super low odds though.

When it comes to sensors, only Mopar if you want it to work, not house brand.

That's what I'm trying to find.

What month and year was your '96 built.

Does the CPS have a short or long pigtail?

Have you tested your TPS?

I believe early 96. January if the date code on the intake manifold is right.

What do you mean by pigtail?

TPS is pretty new. Every time I switch the CPS, the problem changes. Original CPS my car would die once it got up to OT at stop lights and such. 2nd one drove fine for a day or so then would die right after starting. 3rd CPS that I had to sand a little to make fit made the car backfire, misfire, etc. 4th one it idles pretty good but at 1500 RPM it'll start backfiring. The first 3 CPS's were for 96s, this 4th one is for a 97.

Pigtail is the wires from sensor to connection with harness.
TPS can be tested to insure proper operation.
Be sure and check wiring harness for CPS. It passes close to exhaust and engine block, slack in wires can make contact.

I suppose short? The wire itself from sensor to connector is roughly 11 inches. The reason I'm so dead set on the CPS is that when I switch between a few different CPS's, the problem changes. One of them it would die at lights, another would have trouble starting, another had backfires and misfires.

The assembly/production date of your Jeep should be on a decal located on the rear edge of the driver's door.

Compare this data and photos to your XJ.

The '96 had a mid production change for the CPS.

Early production '96 CPS' had a round pin connector (OBD I) - part number 56026921, Late production CPS' had a flat pin connector (OBD II) - part number 56027865.

The '97 had a mid production change for the CPS as well.

Early production '97 CPS's were from the late '96 - part number 56027865, late production '97 CPS's changed to part number 56027866AB, then AC in '99.

Here's some pics:

The CPS that came on the jeep has a pigtail length of roughly 11 inches. The late production 96 photos look just like my setup. I also don't know if that decal is there because the car got a cheap paint job from the people who owned it before me so it might have been taken off or covered.

What do you reckon I do guys? Dealer doesn't have one that fits right. They have that one that almost fits that I could try sanding down properly and seeing if it works since I saw someone say that somewhere in my searches that that works. All the 3rd party shops have weak sensors. And I can't find one online. Jeep been out of commission almost 3 weeks

Verify by VIN with dealer for correct part number for the CPS for your Jeep

goto http://www.moparpartssource.com/p/Mo...opar_StockCode

Order correct OEM part..

A square peg doesn't fit a round hole...the right part requires no "sanding down" of the connector..

I gave you the OEM part number for late production 1996/early production 1997.

Update:

Chrysler has replaced part number 56027865 with part number 68281273AA.

See Mopar America listing.

Yea and the dealership gave me that number as well and that leads me to this sensor:

http://www.quadratec.com/products/55125_0008.htm

Which is the one they said should fit but doesn't. That's the one that I tried sanding a bit.
