What were your numbers on HC and CO?
Example.
Max HC is 220 Read 551 HC is partially unburned fuel
Max CO is 1.2 Read 2.5 CO is unburned fuel.
To help HC is usually tune up things, plugs, wires, cap rotors etc
To help CO is usually anything from air filter to the throttle body. Sensors dirty or not working. Is your timing timed correctly?
If yours has a egr valve on the side of the intake mani that could be stuck open or closed. Or the tubes could be dirty that either go to or from the egr. Clean those with a small wire brush and some type of degreaser. Flush the tubes when done cleaning them. You don't really want that gunk going back into the intake.
NOX, points towards your cat is working correctly. Salt Lake County, Utah got rid of NOX last year.

If your HC and CO numbers are more then double the max limit, seafoam won't help you. Make sure you have new gas. Also higher octane helps.

dude this helped a lot. im changing out just about all of those things this week. I did the seafoam yesterday just to do it. if it doesnt help i figured it wouldnt hurt either.

if I put higher octane in it just for the test will i be able to put regular unleaded back in it after and everything be ok?

Higher octane burns better. Yes you can switch back. It's all up to you.
Any update?

thanks a whole lot man.

well i changed out the plugs, wires, and distributor cap yesterday. im picking up a new O2 sensor today and gonna put that on. i noticed the the charcoal canister was just hanging on to the engine by just one hose. it wasnt held on by the bracket its suppose to be held by. i also noticed there was another hose next to it that wasnt hooked to anything.

new question. is that hose the wasnt attached to anything suppose to be on the charcoal canister?

how many hoses are suppose to go to that cannister?

On your canister, how many ports are there that are not being used. That canister can help with emissions, from fuel vapors or something to that effect.

there was only one port that wasnt being used. One hose was already attached to it but there was another hose right next to the canister that was not attached to anything.

ill take a picture of it all tomorrow and put it up on here

If you don't tell us the numbers of how it failed, we cannot help you.

Adding that stuff to the tank will bring the emissions up - it's mainly oil.. Be sure to burn it all before retesting.
Premium gas burns slower. In an engine designed to use regular, HC may get higher.
Change the oil to get any remnants of that snake oil out. It will affect passing.

i was gonna change the oil today but looks like im gonna put the off till tomorrow.

your the first one to tell me putting in premium might make the numbers go higher.

He says it may get higher. Put like a half quart of atf in your oil, run it for like 10-15 min. Then do a oil change.
Also post those HC and co numbers up.

And DON'T put any more crap in it - not in the tank, not in the oil - not anywhere!

WAIT till we can see what you need!

To get ready, get some GOOD QUALITY oil handy (not synthetic, not oil with food coloring in it, just real oil,) and a good filter (anything but Fram,) but don't change it yet. We may have you do something before you change it.

DO NOT FALL FOR ALL THE SCAM OILS AND ADDITIVES, NO MATTER WHAT THEY PROMISE! There is no such thing as "new motor in a can."

My first smog license was in 1965 - I think I've learned a little through the years since.

CO 3.52 2.36 3.62 1.74

Both HC and CO are high.
Too rich - the rich is causing a slight misfire - HC.
Fix that hose you mentioned. It's a vacuum leak - causing rich, plus the canister is now full of raw gas. After it's repaired, drive it for 1/2 hour to let the manifold vacuum purge the canister. It will run even richer for a few minutes till it's clean again. Do not try to test it then - it will fail for sure.

1 - do you hear any exhaust leaks? That will cause it to be rich. Go under and listen with a big hose held to your ear like a stethoscope.

2 - any vacuum leaks? Use a long hose to blow cigarette smoke in the manifold via a port.- engine off. a leak will also cause it to run rich.
Fix as needed.

Change that oil now, dirty oil will cause rich too - especially if you've put crap in it.

Get a 1/2 tank of FRESH GAS. Get a 1/2 pint of DENATURED ALCOHOL - hardware/paint stores - a cleaning agent $1. Add it to the fresh gas just before you get it tested again. It evaporates fast - gone in a day or 2.

Spark plugs - are they the ones called out on the underhood label? Jeep put it there for a reason!
