Score on Steel for bumpers-
So I work in a steel service center, and got a chance to walk the yard today and check out all the scrap bins.
Found the following:
3"X3" X 72" piece of scrap (is about 3/8" sidewall)
2'X6" X 65" piece of scrap (is 1/4" sidewall).
Having them cut down for front and rear bumpers- front will be 2X6X58
Rear will be 3X3X62, talked to the shop welder and he will weld up a grill guard out of 1"X1" square and weld on some bumper mounts (copied from my stock bumpers).
Total cost = $12 (scrap rate is $.07/lb), welding will cost me a 12 pack of Coors.
They are going to even shot blast them for me to prepare for paint.

Ya, I just found out last weekend that my uncle works at a fuel tank manufacturing plant and said that he can get me whatever i want for pretty much free. I was pretty excited about that!! I am having him build me rock rails and do the fab work for my long arm brackets. We laughed when I showed him pictures of the stuff I want done. He is used to welding tanks that get xrayed so hobby welding is like cake for him.
Yeah, we do structural steel for buildings and our fabricators go through the same thing. I asked him how long it would take to duplicate the bumper mounts on my current XJ bumpers and he said "how about lunchtime today?"
I may be able to drive home with cool new bumpers today! :-)
I can weld, just not very well. These guys weld for a living and have access to a complete metals machine shop. :-)

Ya, I have never welded before but know i could if i just took the time to learn. The rock rails I know i could do myself but i figure if someone is offerering to do it...
I figure if the long arms look nice I will see if anyone on here wants me to get a set for them (i want to try them out first...)

The overall dimensions are right but double check the hole locations before you drill. Apparantly the first two holes need to move back a little bit.
Were they gong to be made out of gold? That is alot for steel... i mean, you should be able to get enough steel to make your bumpers for about that... maybe prices are cheaper here
