My biggest concern after it sitting for ten years outdoors would be brake fluid gone crusty in the lines and wheel cylinders, crankcase oil gone bad/leaked out/contaminated with water.
Set a priorities list. If you know the engine is sound (it fires and runs with starter fluid), check the other main powertrain/driveline components for damage (it was wrecked, correct?) and start getting stuff fixed. Change all lubricants, filters and fluids. Clean everything. Once you're sure the engine is sound, the tranny is sound and it will move under it's own power, rebuild the brakes. I wouldn't drive it one inch without working brakes, not even in a dirt lot. There are several aftermarket plastic gas tanks manufactured, but maybe not as cheap as one from a junkyard. As long as you're doing all this work, you might as well throw an aftermarket in-line fuel filter on it, too. God only knows what kind of crap has drifted into the fuel lines and tank in ten years.

I say go for it! (Sounds like you already are) Actually sounds like not a too bad of a deal with 60,000 on the clock. A awesome frame guy can get ANY car straight as a arrow and better then factory. You are a body guy and you can fix it with little investment and you have a low mile Cherokee. Yep people say there are cheaper ones out there but they are usually beat to death units with 170,000 +miles. Now that you got it started and it runs nice, change the oil, trans fluid, tires, and a once over and drive it. Enjoy your new toy
Also I paid $1,500 for my 2001 with 145,xxx and if this deal came my way I would of jumped on it also.

Not at all don't know the op or anything about his deal. I've owned over 64 cars in my life and I'm 29 and I've learned the really hard lesson you get what you pay for. Low miles is worth its weight in gold because he will have to put less work mechanicaly then in a high mile unit. The red one seems like a good deal but I was meaning the first one that was rattle canned, nice truck ........rolleyes.

I'd love a 96 in decent shape for even $2k, although I agree with the rest... 2K for the one in this thread sucks.

I bought my first cherokee, which was a 1993 with 150,000 for $500 and drove it for two years without any real issues, it did have some rust though. My cherokee I have now is a 1998 with 208,000 I got for $800 and all it needed was two tires. All the front end components had been replaced prior to my purchase including the shocks, springs, and steering stabilizer. Also has a rebuilt transmission done professionally. It has minimal rust but still cost me less than 1k. I guess what I'm saying is 2k for that cherokee with the wrecked rear end is high regardless of the mileage.
Metal to plastic tank swap is easy but u need to use the newer style pump with its connectors it's the same pressure and u will need the straps and fuel lines but if u pay attention the connect at the same place on the frame rail just need a few parts from a 97-01 hope this helped and it's a nice jeep and classic in a 96 are rare
