Do a complete fluid change, at least the coolant and the oil. When you say the overflow is empty... Was it full previously? The #1 symptom of a craked head is unexplained coolant loss.

With that year and previous overheating problems with fluid discoloration you'll need to check for other signs of a cracked head. We need to know if there's coolant in the oil or vice-versa, and if you smell or see anything other than normal exhaust.

Wow, no visible leaks of coolant? That's a lot. Drain the oil immediately and look for coolant.

Check some of these threads.

you have a 2000 which has the Head that is Prone to cracking....If your buddy "Assumed" the HG was the issue and just replaced that. The head may have been cracked and it was missed.

Water (coolant) will settle in the Bottom of the pan and Rust the tip of the Dipstick.

Rust Higher up on the Dipstick above the Hash Marks is Normally from Normal Condensation in the Engine.....Its common on a lot of vehicles that dont drive long enough to bring them up to Full Opp temps.

Like stated Above Do a Oil change...If the oil is Milky you have a Cracked head. Strip it back down and swap a HO Pre 00 Head....
