My father has a stock 96 Cherokee xj 4.0, auto. He was driving the other day, hit a pot hole and the whole truck started to rumble like vibration through the center floor board. He came home, took me for a drive in it, and i personally thought it was fine.

Now when ever he starts it up it is fine in park, when in reverse it starts to noticeably rumble/shake but if u gas it, it goes away. This time i witnessed it, the rumble is not terribly violent but does not seem normal and does not do it in my 99. His tranny shifts fine and it does make a slight rumble in Drive, 1, 2, but nothing like reverse. The truck idles fine in all of the gears, shifts totally fine, and has plenty of power.

Check motor mounts?

Ended up being the bolts where the motor mount connects to engine were sheared off. The engine was tilted to the left sitting on the distributor. All good now
