Rubber Mat in Fender Wells

So, My tires are rubbing on those stupid rubber matts in the fender wells. Well, one came loose and as I looked, theres a gap that I can see behind the panel. So long story, short, can it be pulled down without any adverse effects?

Youll get mud caked in there, could potentially result in rust. I had mine out in my 88 and always got **** caked up in there and it would just fall out over time. You can pull it out and stuff a noodle in there.. Ive seen somewhere where someone fabbed some diamond plate to go back in there..made it look mega clean.
