First post and new to the forum... just bought a '99 XJ off my buddy for next to nothing to drive in the winter (to keep my Mazdaspeed 3 out of the brutal Ohio winters). It's in pretty good shape but the black rubber/plastic side moldings on the doors are kinda jacked up and starting to come off. From what I can tell when I peel them back a little they are just stuck on there with some adhesive. Is that right? If there are no mounting holes in the door itself I think I'll just rip em off and get some Goo Gone to get the remaining adhesive off. Might look better with them removed too.

 

Door ding trim is only held on by strong double sided tape. Not sure the best way to get them off but if you want to they sell trim tape at the auto store. You could rip it off, clean the surfaces and reapply the trim.

 

I think I could probably just pull it off by hand since it's already strated to curl on the ends. If I can get them off and clean it up I'll probably just leave them off. They would look ok on a black XJ but kinds looks tacky on a bright red one. Anyone have any pics of them removed? Just curious how it looks.

 

A lot of people take them off. If you do it carefully you can remove them without damaging the paint underneath. Looks much cleaner without them IMO. When I removed mine I used a heat gun to warm up the adhesive and they pulled right off. some rubbing alcohol or goo gone will remove the rest of the adhesive. Post some pics up once you're finished!

 

Pull my off SLOWLY by hand giving a little extra help with a razor just to but the foam of the double sided tape holding them on. Then used a little bit of everything I had to get the dirt/glue off. Mind looked immediately better without it. Sounds like you are already on the right track. Work them off slowly and then get the elbow grease ready. Good Luck.

 

the easiest way is to pull them off by hand and use an Eraser Wheel for a drill to remove the adhesive. it won't take half as long and it works very well.

 

wd 40 also will remove the glue
