I'm sorry. Part of what I love about our Jeeps is working on them and I think I enjoy that part more than driving them. So I like to get people new to Jeeps involved. If you are an inexperienced mechanic. We will try to give you the confidence to do the work on them that we all do. It can't be too hard if a dumb bunny like me can do it. There are certain requirements like tools and no fear of getting filthy. Other than that we will talk you through just about anything. I would not tackle a few things like rebuilding a transmission (automatic) but that and setting up gears in the differentials are about all I won't tackle. Would try the gears if I had the proper tools too.
So I am not pushing you but I would like to see you enjoy the sense of accomplishment that I feel when I have finished a new task that I would never have tackled a few years ago.

haha, most of us use 80/90 gear oil. The axles are not really picky. The autoparts and even walmart should carry blue or black RTV sealant. It's about $4 in a toothpaste like tube. You tighten the bolts snug. Turn them till it starts getting hard and then maybe 1/4 turn after that. Do it in a star pattern. If you have a drill, you could pick up a wire brush for drills and it would clean off the mating surface very easily.

You can get the smaller bottles of gear oil and just pour them in from the bottle. THey have pointed tips to make it easy to pour. Or you can get the transfer pump at the auto store. It's about $8. I usually buy the gear oil by the gallon and use the pump to pump it in. You keep pumping till the fluid gets up to the hole level and starts to come out and then that's enough. Wipe off excess and plug the hole. All done

Nah, a gallon should do both front and rear with some left over.

Do you happen to know if your rear axle is a dana 35 or chrysler 8.25? Does it have a limited slip? Just wondering....

See I told you we would help you element. Mudd has done this a thousand times and is very knowledgeable. So listen to him. I personally use a putty knife to get the surfaces as clean as possible and then use a scotchbrite pad to get it even cleaner. When using the RTV a thin ribbon is all that is needed. too much may squish inside and get in the gears and that probably wouldn't hurt anything but lets not find out.
Let us know if you have more questions.

Lol, how easy is the transmission change?
It's similar to oil changes. Drain and fill to appropriate fill level on dipstick. There should be a drain plug on the flat tranny pan. I had mine flushed at midas for $100 cuz it was brown and very dirty. I only had 82k on the ticker so i took my chances to get it flushed instead of draining and filling 3 or 4 times to get it all. I'm not sure how much fluid you will need cuz i'm so used to the 3 speed auto on my old wrangler and i haven't messed with the AW4 4 speed on the cherokee much yet (i just got the jeep a year ago) so maybe Blue or someone else will chime in on how much fluid to get. I do know it uses DexonIII transmission fluid.
