Default Rough idle

I have a 97 sport that is starting to act weird. It has a rough idle then will idle up to 1200 rpm then surge but it won't do it all the time. I checked for vacume leaks but didn't see any. Any ideas with it being intermediate I hate to just throw parts at it I guess I'm gonna try map sensor

Check and clean your IAC. I know whenever I clean mine it idles really smooth.

As for the High Idle check your TPS, I had a high idle at one point and had to replace this part.

They are both located on the throttle body and you just need some Torx tools to remove them. While you are at it you can always clean the throttle body too.

I hope this is your problem as these are both easy tasks.

Had the same with my 98 sport. Cleaning the IAC and the throttle body solved the issue.

Also, welcome to the forum! Come and ask a bunch of questions but just try searching for your answer first. Some guys give you a lot of heat on here, but I don't mind answering what I know. If you ever have a question I'd just go to google type it in and be sure to include "jeep cherokee XJ" typically you will get a link that will send you to a forum that people have had similar problems with. But good luck and welcome to the forum.

And I think the TPS is something that more or less needs to be replaced rather than cleaned. But I could be mistaken!
