i am just bolting a roof bar tire carrier to the side rails. kind of like the rockratz version:

What about putting a 145 lb roof tent on the factory rack? Will it hold two people sleeping in it?

The tent I am thinking about is the bigfoot explorer.

if you mount it straight to the roof I doubt it. But I've seen a few XJ build a with a roof tent and it works somehow. I'd just try really hard to spread the load and avoid any extreme movements while inside the tent. Might not hurt to have a few support beams right under the mounting points (like holding up the cross beams of the roof)
