Default Roof Rack

I was going to make a rack in my welding class but that fell through. Now I am looking for cheap racks for my XJ. Any ideas, websites, brands etc...

thanks

If you are looking to put anything in the rack and wheel, surco racks are alumium...and bend real easy with the weight of a tire or a cooler full of beer. I had a surco for about six years, when i sold it, the thing was almost falling apart. I would look for something that is welded construction or build your own.

The Surco I have is as solid as the day I got it 4 or more years ago. It has a spare up there and seems to still be strong. No bent parts that I can see.

Along the same lines...

I am looking for a roof rack as well. I have a 94 sport and was looking at a Garvin Wilderness series. They can mount directly on the factory rails.

I was thinking this would be a benefit over drilling holes or clamping to the rain gutters.

Is there a benefit either way? Does anyone know of any problems mounting a rack on the factory rail system? The only problem I have is the $500 price tag.

Any opinions, recommendations, or cautions of using the factory rails?

My Surco has been on for 3 years with no issues. I did plate the sides with aluminum diamond plate. I have my spare,Hilift, shovel and some lights on mine. Works great.
I use it to haul my tree stands to and from the woods.

I made my own... from a bed frame, some square tubing and scrap pieces of machine guards.

But I took it off.... That tire is HEAVY when you are trying to lift it up there. Or even worse when its full of mud and water....

Mine mounts to the oem rails, I went that way because it mounts lower to the top of the Jeep. Directions say to remove the adjustable cross bars, i left mine on and mounted the rack to them as well.
