Default Rocker panel replacement

Wondering if I can cut along below the door on the rocker panel 3/4 the way from the rear and cut the rocker panel to fit inside the existing rocker panel. Rivet it and weld the bottom mated flange on the bottom. Is that possible? Thank you.

Are you asking if you can cut out a rocker and then replace it with another one from another jeep that is a little bigger?

I still need to do mine, but I was talking to a fellow Jeeper who was telling me that everyone is using glue now. Have you looked into this? Seems a lot easier the way he talked and he's a welder.

Just using a $79 dollar rocker panel. I've watched videos of the installing of rock sliders and they cut the corner out just below the door all the way across. I was thinking if I cut the top part off and use the new piece that will fit under I could rivet it from the top and weld the bottom flange. If I knew how to post pics I'd show you.

Glue does sound good but does it work on the sealer? I could see glue and pop rivets. I want mine to seal for 10 years even though I'm over 70. I'm a welder but am used to welding armor plate on navy ships. Thin stuff is tough and I don't see as well as I used to.

The xj is a unibody so all the body parts are structural. If you use rivets you would need lots. Also, water will easily get in and that will create issues.

Rivets and self tapping screws on the perimeter and weld the floor pan to the fake frame rail. Maybe glue and welds for the rockers. Plan on using some Dynatron gray auto seam sealer caulk. Have wire wheeled the rust and used VHT and VHT enamel engine primer. I almost have the floor pan fitted. Everything underneath with any gaps will be filled and then undercoat. It's the rocker panels that is giving me fits. Most everything is in good shape on the rocker except the very bottom and the back plate by the rear wheel on the passenger side.
