That bearing cap piece of the pan gasket had me scratching my head also when I had mine apart.
Just reading your thread now and noticed the pic of your bearing cap had it still.
Too bad I showed up late ti the party here but glad you got it.
I like having no oil drips too!

Thanks, money. There were only 5 or 6 people participating in this thread and I didn't state my question very obviously. If I knew it was that important I would have asked more aggressively but if I knew that much, I probably wouldn't have had to ask. It doesn't matter now, I'm glad it's over and I feel much more confident knowing what I now know.

I had been kinda watching this thread also but haven't been on much anymore and just seen the pictures of the rear cap too and jump out at me, that there's your problem.

To use, I remove the components that make up the mandrel on the left side and slide the assembly into the axle until the threads are visible inside the disco orifice. I then place a new seal on the threads inside the orifice followed by the old seal (and associated washers), then the large steel disc and finally, the hex nut. With the plywood on the other end of the press I tighten the outer hex nut until the wood is seated flat against the hub carrier. From there it's just a matter of slowly tightening that outer hex bolt which evenly pulls the seal into the axle. There is an unmistakable "stop" when the seal is fully seated that you can feel when tightening the outer nut. Reverse the process to get the press out of the axle and you're done. It takes about 15 minutes, start to finish.

Overall view of the entire assembly.

That looks just like my axle press I made easiest way to do it and pretty much no problems either. Its weird you do the rms and have nothin but problems when it super easy, but figuring out a jig on how to do the axle seal is more complicated, I guess it all depends on what your background is, but they also say learning isn't cheap either, glad your finally got it done.

It looked odd to me but never having been into a 4.0 I left it to the more experienced. I wonder if " ask a question" thread would have nailed it. (had we known the question). In any case, between now and the end of the CF server, your thread will likely help out at least a few!

I'm pretty sure I modeled my axle seal press after the one you built. It was for sure not my own idea, it was based on something I'd seen here. The psychology of Jeep repair is tricky for me, if I've done something once, I can do it again... forever. But I'm very methodical in the way I approach things (some call it OCD, lol) which means the obvious isn't always as obvious to me as it might be to others.

I've tried the Ask a Question thread a couple times in the past but in both instances, my question quickly drifted down the page without a response. I'm hopeful the experience chronicled in this thread will be of use to someone.

10-4, Guess I've heard that before. And how the heck would you find it if someone did? Guess you could include, "I met a woman that brings me new Jeep parts before breakfast" , then Google would find your post

Yea Hp..N the press. Like you guys I've been to a few Rodeos. Just didn't occur to me to "sandwich"/double nut on the seal. I was too smart to look closely at the deals people showed me. Not to discredit other engineers who have designed similarly hellish phit, but that one ranks. (if you ever get board, look at the trans cooler lines on an Exploder)
