I have a 1996 Cherokee Country. When the vehicle is running I am hearing a slight ringing coming from the back. It is definitely coming from the inside. It only rings when the car is running... not when the electricity is on... Any ideas?

 

Is it coming from the rear speakers?

That was my first guess but its not. It also happens whether the stereo is on or off.

 

Maybe the fuel pump? Any troubles with starting, idle, or acceleration??

No. Not that I have noticed.

 

may sound stupid but remove the gas cap and listen in the hole see if the noise gets louider

start pulling fuses until the noise stops would be my next step

 

if you can answer this... is it mechanical or electrical? metal on metal can sounds like a ringing... when does it do this? when doesnt it do this? do you have aftermarket stereo w/ subs etc...?
