So yesterday while i was putting the oil control rings in, my buddy was looking at the compression rings and when he went to put them back he mixed them up thinking they were both the same after looking at them. Well little did he know they are not the same, and now i don't know which ring goes with which grove. I am pretty sure ring 1 goes on the top groove, and ring 2 goes on the middle groove, but just to be safe, i figured i should ask the experts. Thanks

Have not had the pleasure of assembly of a Jeep yet, however on other engines I've seen, ford, dodge,GM, there is three grooves on the piston, two compression rings and an oil ring. Usually the compression rings will go in the same as the other and will have a dot on the ring indiacating top. the reason is cause of the gap where the ring comes together in the groove needs tobe in a different spot of the second one or middle groove, perferably 180 degrees from the top one. so this allows compression for the cylinder. hope this makes since?

that makes perfect sense, i guess my last question is which ring goes in the top or middle groove... the diagonals on the rings are on the top of one, and the bottom of the other, so which one goes where? if that makes sense lol

In your pic it shows that the #2 pic of the ring should have the dot or a round dot indented on the top of the ring that goes up and the same for the other, look closely it should be near the end of the ring (ends). at any point the dots mean it is to be put is with the dot up.

they both have the dot facing up, i am 100% sure... thats why i am confused at which groove to put them in because they are different.

then can you or do you have another box of new rings to install for the others or were you just replacing the one? If you have already install the other pistons you may have to pull one back out to look at them. or wait>? Just checked out the manual in the chilton book, it show that on the ring there is on dot of the top and two dots for the second. does your rings show that?

I have not installed my pistons yet, and i wasn't the one who removed the old rings off my old pistons, the machine shop did that so i can't look at those. And i got my engine kit from the machine shop as well. Both sets of rings only have 1 mark, not the best design in my opinion haha.
