Right Rear Drum Rubbing
Hello all,
I have an issue with my 2000 XJ. About a year and a half ago I put all new brakes on the XJ by myself. They have worked flawlessly up until about two days ago. While driving to work, the right rear would grind excessively while braking. It got worse as I drove it. I got it home that night, took the wheel off, pulled the drum, cleaned everything, put it back together and drove it around the block. It braked perfect. Today on my way to work which is about 25 miles, it started to grab hard again about half way there and then started rubbing slightly when not braking.
I will take it apart again tonight but it seems like maybe the adjusting mechanism is not working properly. I was wondering if anyone has experienced this or has any ideas on what I should be checking.
Thanks in advance.

Go grab a new spring kit for about $4, my old XJ did this and when I compared the new springs to the old ones, my old ones actually had more tension then a few of the new ones.
Also, have you adjusted them correctly via the star wheel?

My 2000 XJ is doing the exact same thing and I'm frustrated with it. I put all new brake hardware on the rear to include new drums. They start out working great but after a day or two they get out of adjustment. I've taken my wheel off and inspected/cleaned/adjusted just like you only to have the same thing happen again. I'll be watching this thread with hopes that someone can shed light on this.

I'll assume the pads and drum are OK. Have you tried replacing/rebuilding the Wheel Cylinders and bleeding. New set of springs $5 and new cylinders $15. Is your EBRAKE correctly adjusted?? If not, the auto adjusters will not work.

Thanks for the responses.
Yep pads are fine. Drums have some wear but not enough to replace. I did not replace the wheel cylinders but that is an option. I will check the ebrake tonight and readjust the star wheel.
One weird thing is when I back up and press hard on the brake. I assume that is when the shoes adjust, they do not rub for about a mile and then after that they rub again. Drums to not get hot even after a long drive.

yeah, when you stop in reverse and when you pull the brake lever, the auto adjusters should engage.. It sound like you are having a return spring or binding issue.

Just wanted to give an update.
Last night on the way home from work it was rubbing really bad. I made it home and pulled off the wheel and drum and the adjuster fell on the ground. It looks like it was never adjusting the shoes out as they wore. I replaced it and put it back together and now its as good as new.
Thanks for all the help!
