hello everyone, I write from Italy (Rome), I need information to mount the right rimg and pinion on my xj, because here in Italy, no one knows Jeeps like you Americans and no one here knows how to answer me.
I have a xj wagoneer 4.0 imported from Venezuela with Dana 44 front and rear and 31" tires with a Peugeot ba 10/5 gearbox........
Some previous owner changed ring and pinion, and my jeep has too short gears ...... with first gear, I go a meter and I never have the right gears on climbs ....... always high revs and high fuel consumption.
What ratio should I put? 3:73 ? 3:07 ?.......I don't know what to do to get closer to the old ratio stock.......can you help me please? Thank you

You can check to see the ratio you have by simply removing the cover from one axle.

Once we know that, we can better guide you.

hello ...... here I am .... I removed the differential cover and I counted the teeth of the pinion and the ring.
the teeth of the ring are 45
the pinion teeth are 11
what should I do to bring the Xj ratio similar to stock?
I have 31" tires.

no, i miei rapporti sono troppo corti...... ci vorrebbero le gomme da 33", ma non le posso usare in Italia

What is your current fuel consumption?

You could end up spending thousands of dollars to maybe gain 1 MPG.

Folks over here run the ratios you have and get as good or better fuel mileage than stock.
Do you drive on highways? What are the speed limits?

it's not a speed problem....... it's an engine problem..... I'm always high with the revs and I never have the right gear uphill

Even so, slowing down the RPMs doesn't necessarily give you better fuel mileage. What RPMs are you concerned about? The 4.0 isn't a low RPM truck engine.
How many miles per gallon are you getting now?
Do you really want to spend thousands of dollars for nothing or very little?
You asked for the Americans input.......Guys over here would love to have your tire size and gears!!!
