Reviving Neutral Safety Switch - Reverse light still not working
Reviving Neutral Safety Switch - Reverse light still not working
Ok guys... Neutral safety switch - the jeep has been giving me trouble lately cranking and the reverse lights aren't working. I understand both of these issues are related to a bad neutral safety swtich. When I try to crank it, it clicks like its about to turn on, but then it hesitates there sometimes for a few second before it does actually turn over if I continue to hold the key in that position. Other times, it will turn over first try no problem. Odd right? So today I pulled out the nns (which was a bit of a pain i'll say), got it cleaned up with parts cleaner and put some fresh dielectric grease. I made sure to dry everything and sand down the metal contacts and springs inside the switch. After that I put it back together and put it back on. So... Now it cranks up first try in park and in neutral (it didn't crank in neutral before so I know what I did helped) but the reverse lights still don't work. I understand you can adjust the bolt on the switch slightly sometimes to get the reverse lights to work and to get it to start in neutral. I've tried it with the bolt tightened down in a couple different positions but no luck. I put fresh reverse bulbs in just before this to make sure those were good.
Pics below just for reference:
This is what it looked like after I finally got all the zip ties cut and pulled it off the tranny
After I cleaned the outside with parts cleaner
This is when I had it all apart. I sprayed break cleaner on the inside of the switch as well. After sanding everything down I put some fresh grease on
This is the switch after I installed it back on the jeep
Can you think of any other reason why both of my reverse lights still aren't working? Is my wiring just jacked?
Did you turn the NSS back and forth while the car was on and have someone spot the brake lights until they came on? or did you just click the key over, shift into the reverse position, and do it from there with the car off?
Just wanting to make sure I'm doing it right since I tried doing this yesterday and rotating it all the way back and forth, and no reverse lights came on.
That may be the case with mine Cruisuer... I thought it was working great after I cleaned it yesterday. Now it is back to giving me trouble starting it again. I guess I may need a brand new one.
