If you have an automatic then your Neutral Safety Switch needs to be removed and cleaned. It is on the passenger side of the transmission and will have a wiring harness running up the passenger side of the engine.

Replacement's have gotten cheaper in the last couple years. You can get one cheaply on carpartswholesale.com

No offence, but smurfette666... did your read this thread at all before posting? The reason I ask is because your question is, well, the same question the OP posted, and all the responses are the answer.

Anyway, Nice idea about using the garage door to check what gear you are in on the NSS. That part was fun. And for future reference, don't be like me and get confised if you can't find the NSS. If it is not where these guys said it was, your PO could be like mine, and just removed the NSS. This sucks, as you end up buying new, and I had to use a Cheater bar just to get mine back on. lol.

Glad to here the OP got theirs fixed and running, and good luck to you, smurfette666. Let us now how that goes.

Default 1997 Jeep Cherokee Reverse Lights Not Working

I found this forum by a google search. I recently registered my Jeep in VA and went to get it inspected. It was rejected because the reverse lights didn't work. It wasn't the bulbs or a fuse. I had also noticed that it had begun to have difficulties starting in Park from time to time and to start it, you would have to shift it to Neutral and back to Park several times, then it would start. There is a switch call the Neutral Safety Switch that not only controls the vehicle being able to start in certain areas on the shifter such as Park, but this switch also allows the reverse lights to come on when the vehicle is placed in reverse. I got online and looked this up to see how to replace it to save a few bucks and learned that a new NSS costs $279.99 at Advanced Auto. So I ran across a few links to include this forum that discussed that the NSS could be removed, disassembled, cleaned, reassembled, and that could fix the issue as inside the switch, there are contacts and springs that get tarnished and no longer spring as needed due to old grease and grime. Needless to say, I followed the inputs from this forum and other online posts and did exactly as they all described and when I finished re-installing the NSS after cleaning the insides, the vehicle started in Park and yes, the reverse lights came on. By doing this myself, I saved $450-$500 dollars. The job took me about 2.5 hours but if I have to do it again, now that I've done it once and see how to do it, the job would take me less than an hour. Thought I would post to to let others know that this forum is extremely useful and that the methods for fixing the reverse lights as described in cleaning the NSS do work.

Nice to see some correct info on this for a change. For some reason, it appears on these forums that a lot of people think that, since dielectric grease is an electrical insualtor, it is bad for electrical connections.

That's what it's made for! The grease is displaced at the actual contact points, so does not interfere with the flow of electricity. Where there isn't actual metal to metal contact, the grease prevents corrosion.

That's a good thing, folks!

Default Reviving this post..lol

So I picked up a 92 xj for the kids and the reverse lights will not come on . I took the NSS switch out cleaned and reinstalled. Apon reinstalling I noticed a jumper in the plug so I removed it. The JEEP always started but just no reverse lights. Put everything back and still no lights. I even tried leaving it in reverse and moving the nss switch back and forth to see if the lights would come on and nothing. Where is the fuses for the lights. Whoever had this JEEP before us was a complete moron I have found all sort of things halfassed. The rear wiper furs was missing and I'm guessing that might be the problem with the lights ,but I just can't find out witch fuse it can be. Can any one PM me if you have ny ideas. Thanks

Most fuses are gonna power more than one thing. On 93 it shows in in pdc box under hood . Maybe no 6. http://www.go.jeep-xj.info/HowtoNSSrebuild.htm
