Since I bought my 88 xj my reverse lights have never worked. Tonight I checked the bulbs and replaced both with new ones and checked the wires in the back. I also checked the Nuetral Start Switch and dont really know how to check it. It was covered in mud so I cleaned the outside and sprayed electrical cleaner into the wire housing but couldnt take it completely apart to check with a volt meter. Does any one have any other suggestions?

hate to thread jack but i'm in a similar spot, cleaned out the nss, replaced the bulbs and the fuse and still no reverse lights. any suggestions?

 

Cleaning of the neutral safety switch MAY but does not GUARANTEE function. They can fail electrically, in which case cleaning will be of no value.

If you have eliminated all other causes (bad contacts on sockets, etc), then you may end up replacing the NSS.

 

checking for power to the wire that operates the reverse lights in the nss should be checked goin in and coming out

 

I have the same issue and will try

 

mine died in both my 90 & 92 . said to heck with them cause the switch that controls them is in the tranny. so i cut the positive wires in the rear & ran new wire back there & put them on a switch. that way i can use them to assist in recovery at night.

btw use a lighted switch

 

I had a similar problem last week and eventually figured it out. Here is the thread that ultimately sorted it out. There are several things to look for in there instead of focusing solely on the NSS.
