so I notice last night that I've got no reverse lights. From searching the forums here, it seems that a likely suspect is the neutral safety switch. But, people who have had issues with NSS have also had problems starting their heaps up, which I don't have at all. I don't mind cleaning the NSS, but wont' if I don't have to. I've checked the bulbs, and they are fine. Any thoughts? Thanks!

 

A pretty good indication that it's your NSS is if you put it in reverse, then wiggle in back and fourth if they come on. THat's what mine does yet I have no problem starting.

i had the exact same problem with my old transmission as you are.. it would start perfectly but no reverse lights... it most likely is your nss.. happens to alot of xjs with miles

 

There are a series of spring loaded contacts inside the NSS.

MOST times when the Reverse lights don't work there is a problem starting.

MOST times.

For your situation it may be that just one set of contacts is stuck.
Give it a little time, the NO START problem will occur.

Best to get it all over with and pop that NSS outta there and clean it up.

 

Howler, your "where there is smoke there is soon to be fire" seems to be spot on (though let's hope there no literal fire). Looks like I know what I'm up to this weekend.
