Default Replacing door hinge pin in 98 XJ ? ? ? ?

I would like to purchase the kit that NAPA sells containing the replacement parts for the driver side door hinge pin.

The problem I'm facing (haven't bought the parts kit yet) is that the NAPA kit has a half - moon clip that goes on the bottom of the pin. I've inspected my O.E. hinge and the pin that wears out, which are still in place, and there is no such clip of the original pin.

Maybe the '98 is some what different than what the NAPA kit is intended for. Anyone have information and /or suggestion to offer me ? I won't want to consider a trip to the salvage yard, since most of those doors would have wore out hinge pins the same as what I have. Thanks

The loud "Pops" and "Snaps" are not the door hinge. Those sounds are related to a wore pin in the Door Check Arm mounting bracket.

The Jeep dealer sells the replacement pin which is P.N. 55012900 (98 X.J.). I ordered two this morning at $5.50 each delivered. If you need the mounting bracket because the pin hole has wore too big, the bracket P.N. is 55002361 from the dealer. I didn't price the bracket.

Quadratec has the pin as Q.T.P.N. 55014.8203 ('84-'01 X.J.) at a price of $5.99 plus shipping.

Hope this helps,

Webb

My '98 does the same thing. I sprayed some white lithium grease on it and wiped the excess off. Helped a little. With the door open: grab the door handle and lift up. If there is noticeable slop up and down your hinge pins and bushings need to be replaced. If not I wouldn't worry about hinge pins. Mine are tight.

Thank you for the advise, I will have to lift up on it when I go out next. I have noticed that when I open the door it does drop down slightly, maybe an 1/8" or less. I dont mind replacing pins or something, but I am not gonna spend an arm and a leg....I tried white lithium too and it didnt really help any. Not a big deal just annoying....gotta love the XJ.....

The hinge pins aren't that hard to replace. I used a dremel tool and cut the plastic coating, then cut the pin in half. Use a chisel to drive into the cut as a wedge which will pop the pin out. You may have to drive the other half out. There are bushings that you need to take out, place the new ones in and install the new pins.

The hardest part is getting the door lined up. I did one hinge at a time, which helped and tied it off with rope, but having someone hold the door is the easiest. GL

I bought the hinge pin kit from napa and one pin was too big to fit in the hole. What really fixes the problem are the bushings that come in the kit. The factory pins have bushings that wear out and the door begins to drop. The factory pins are pressed in thats why they look different. I used a 5/16 bolt and 2 nuts in place of the pin that was too big, with the bushings in there, no play. I drilled the top of the factory pins out and then used a punch to knock them out, I don't own a dremel tool.

I replaced the pin in the drivers door of my '98 not to long ago. Door was sagging slightly. Used a dremel to dril it out etc. Not to complicated job.

However, I found out it wasn't the pin, but the hinge itself that was worn out! More difficult to replace at least for me, as it would involve welding.

I just adjusted the door and the door catch. Worked fine.

Yeah, mine pops and cracks when opening and closing. The holes in the bracket and stop are enlarged. It needs to have pins made closer to the size of the worn holes.

I picked my new Door Check Arm Pins today at the Dealership and went to install the driver's side. In the process, I found out that the hole in the small bracket which is mounted with two hex head bolts to the door post was enlarged from wear.

So, the bracket has to be replaced at the same time as the pin. It's called the "Check Arm Bracket" and is MOPAR P.N. 55002361. Cost is $9.50.

I need to replace the hinge pins/bushings and some kind of door check parts on my XJ as well. Both front doors sag when opened and the door checks no longer work on either side. Does anyone know of a writeup for either job? The hinge pins seem straightforward enough to replace, but I don't know what these pins on the door check straps are that you guys are referring to...
