My transfer case output shaft seal was leaking so I replaced the seal and the bushing inside of the output extension housing.

The seal is still leaking. I can rock the driveshaft yoke up and down. I think the splines are probably worn (320k kms).

I can't find a replacement slip yoke for the NP242. Anyone?

How's the bearing?

You can use one from an NP231 driveshaft too. Or buy new from a good driveline shop. Are you lifted any? There are longer options as well.

peligro: Is it bearing #32 in this picture you are talking about? It supports the main shaft on the rear side of the case?

Pull the DS off and wiggle the output shaft, if it moves too much.......bearing.


Doubt your splines are that worn.

NP transfer cases from that era come in 27-spline or 32-spline. All the 27-spline shafts are the same size, AFAIK. The main difference between the various slip yokes is their length.

The XJ 231 and 242 use the same driveshaft part number in the Jeep parts catalog, with the same 27-spline rear output shaft with the same Spicer stamping. The 242-HD from the V8 WJ and Durango is a 32-spline output and is different. I also have 27-spline yoke from a YJ (same), 27-spline yoke from a NP247 (same), 32-spline shaft from an NP233-C (same), and so on.
