Gates:
Engineered to resist electrochemical degradation - the leading cause of hose failure.

- Re-engineered materials resist vacuum collapse. This reduces the need for internal springs in many applications.

I used one out of an old SBC hose I had in the spare hose box. That was because it was free and I couldn't find a hose with the coil in it for an XJ.
but the coils themselves are easily found

I bought some stainless ones about 4" long. I put 2 in the bottom hose. Usually a spring from an old hose is not worth putting in to a new hose.

You do not need that spring. The lower hose had a spring from the factory because the factory applied vacuum to fill the cooling system on the assembly line. Should you encounter a collapsed hose, the radiator cap not releasing pressure as it cools, or a blocked overflow hose are at the top of the list.

As everyone else said, you don't need it. I've been running a lower hose without the spring for two years with no problems whatsoever.

I agree that you don't need one. If you must have one, you can buy a nice stainless one here: https://www.cjponyparts.com/HW769/p/...d-14187766af8f

I've never HAD a spring. Had the jeep for almost 17 years now. Have changed the bottom hose a couple of times. Never even knew it originally came with one.
No problems here.
