Default replaceing my fuel pump

im in the middle of replaceing my fuel pump ive gotten the straps off and the take supported but i cant fyger out how to take the filler neck off the tank i saw that theirs an access panel to get to it held on by 4 bolts i cant seem to fyger out the size its smaller then a 10mm but bigger then a 9mm and same thing with a 7/16 and 3/8. so my best guess is that they are 9.5mm anyone able to confirm this? i cant find a 9.5mm socket anywhere.

this is on a 1991 XJ 4.0L and 4wd if that helps

what are you doing? taking the gas tank out? my 91, the fuel pump is on the passenger side in front of the tank on the bottom. you shouldnt hav to take the tank off. just make sure you hav like a quarter tank of gas or less in the tank.

ill try that tomorrow i might be able to get two of them the other two are in a place where i cant get them with anything but a socket, i still got some tricks up my sleeve but i dont like "red necking" it when working on my cars

so this would still be an in tank fuel pump? cause i havent seen a pump out side of it but when i bought the new one the guy said that i needed a strainer for it cost an extra ten bucks i hope i didnt get rooked

also any good repair manuals i dont like chiltons or hayns id prefer the shop manuals made for the jeep dealership mechanics they are way more in depth

you should be able to pull the fuel pump out without dropping the tank... the older ones are this way anyways... but i figured there was a reason you were doing this... and its not rednecking using vise grips... if the bolts stripped out then what else are you gonna use? we use vise grips all the time on aircrafts... thats what they were made for!!

i foreget what they are calld but it looks like a socket but on the inside if it they have edges that will bight into the heads of the bolts as you turn it counter clock wise to take out bolts that are stripped btw im not makeing fun of rednecks i dont like makeing fun of my self.

after i read the posts here i fygered i should but a chiltons so i put the straps back on to hold the jeep looked right where redmuck said where it was and their it was so monday ill be takeing it out and puting the new one in, was going to do it today but girlfriends dd needed a new water pump, the jeep is next though
