I'm pretty sure it almost died when I did that last, but I don't remember. I've created a large vacuum leak (pulling the brake booster hose)
And then plugged the hose back and it used to make it idle right for a little while, but I don't think even that will work anymore.

If it almost died, but didn't, we could be on to something.

Renix era issues-photo811.jpgRenix era issues-photo549.jpgRenix era issues-photo183.jpgRenix era issues-photo797.jpg all of these were taken at "idle" the rpms its idling at are show in the bottom right. All the other readings were within the specs included with the REM.

Are there any items I should monitor while driving?

Tried to kinda switch between things while driving and one thing that stuck out was the ignition timing. When I was engine braking it would be in the 20s then drop to nothing and yank the truck then back up to the 20s and then back down.

Noticed today while I was driving it that every time it sputtered it the timing was over 40* and the o2 voltage would read close to 5v and stay around that range until I punched the gas or I let off the gas and then the timing would drop (punching it or letting off) and it would stop sputtering. So could my distributor be stabbed too far advanced? Or is it in the computer?

Sure shows high vacuum also. Got a spare MAP sensor to try?

I do not, but I'm sure I can get one from a junkyard soon. I also have a vacuum gauge I could hook up and compare numbers.

Gauge would be good.

So I was looking at stuff today between classes and thinking about things. I wonder if the ignition timing reading the REM provides is the advance the computer is putting in to try to get it right. There are quite a few threads where people have the stumbling issue around that rpm range that had their distributors 1 tooth retarded and I'm thinking if my distributor is 1 tooth retarded and the computer is trying to advance it 40+ degrees to make up for the gap.

Turned it counter clockwise a tooth and it runs much better than it did. I tried indexing it when I originally rebuilt the motor, but the timing lines on the balancer had spun some, the distributor is from autozone because they were the only ones with one, the cam is aftermarket and it did not run well with the trailing edge at the #1 post when I originally did it. I tried an extra tooth clockwise and it wouldn't run so I think I'll end up cutting the locating tab so I can turn it back just a hair more. The ignition timing got to like 44* or so when I did the test drive. It doesn't stumble or sputter anymore at least that I can tell so far. The idle is still very high though.
So bullet points
-turned counter clockwise a tooth
-no more stumble yet
-much more power
-still high idle
-have not put the vacuum gauge on it as I ran out of time before dinner plans
I think that sums it up

I guess this means I need to cut up another cap since my cut one is back at my parent's place an hour away.
