It's the same concept. Your trying to get air out of the head from the highest point. If you jack up the back of the Jeep the sending unit is the highest point. Many people on here believe it or not are not mechanically capable of drilling holes and taping them with a plug or drain ****. Yes, your method is better, but for average XJ owner it is more technical and if not done properly could cause problems and cause the vehicle to be out of comission for a couple of days. Some think changing their spark plugs is a huge accomplishment.
The sending unit is easy and anyone can do it. Most mechanic types already know about making a burp hole in the therm housing. My Jeep is my only vehicle without one because it is almost as easy to do as a plug in the therm housing which is at the front of the head instead of the back of the head. I have not had any problems doing it this way and my XJ runs cool. I'm just putting out another option that is easy.

QUOTE=cruiser54;1678287]I like this idea and I've installed thermostats into Renix Jeeps without burping them at all after drilling the flange.

The factory stat has a hole with a BB in it that you install at 12 o'clock. That didn't need burping either and I've had faster warm-ups and more stable temps as a result of buying and instaling the factory stat 83501426.[/QUOTE]

It's all good. He's just talking about making a little hole on the edge of the thermostat for air to get through, not the housing. If your new one has one already, it goes up^.

Oh, i got ya. Yeah some don't have one. I thought he was talking about the therm housing. Which is a cool mod. my fault. I see a lot of advice on here that is great, but for some people can be a little tricky for them. I have seen a lot of tune ups where the previuos owner never changed one or two of the spark plugs because they didn't know to use an extension and univesal for the hard to get to plugs. Lol. And sometimes people need a "now" fix, easy and quick.
Have a good one.

One hole works okeh - the one with the little brass "flapper" in the hole breaks up air bubbles to prevent logjams.

However, having two holes is easier - the upper one passes gasses out of the engine, the lower one passes liquid into the engine, and you don't get logjams. Easy enough!

I've just had 3 Napa/Stant stats fail to come up to operatating temp and got to their max temp slowly. I drilled 2 holes in 2 of them and no holes in the last one. Not fun in winter in the Arizona high country. I swapped in the factory stat and all works well.

LOL... That it does.

Anyway, back to topic. I am still anxiously waiting to get a fan shroud. It seems the cap has worked well, as it hasn't overheated since. Granted, I have not drivin it that far. Anyway, I will keep posted, but I think the biggest problem may have been the crscked cap and the lack of shroud, considering I was delivering pizzas, constantly stopping and going, you know?
