Look where the wheel studs are, you should see a hole in the pattern. Spin that till it lines up with the nuts in the back, there should be four total. It should be a 9/16th, take off all 4 nuts then pull out your shaft. Well its that easy with a dana 44. The nuts will be in a square pattern, like at the corners of the square.

Thanks guys, still have some questions.
Do I need to take apart this drum brake assembly in order to pull the axle shaft?
Also- Not sure which axle it actually is, I've never needed to know untill now. Any sure fire identifiers? Again, it's a 87 cherokee pioneer with the 4.0.
If it is the c-clip type, how involved is removing the diff. cover and the likes?

You shouldn't have c-clips.

Good article ol"blue. Nice find. Yes most 87s came with a D44 and have no C clips. So examine the plate behind the axle flange and see if you have those square headed bolts. If you do just follow the instructions given by tampviking.
