Default remote keyless entry

Hey all, back again with some more questions. I finally got the build sheet for my jeep, and as I was going through it, i noticed it said it came with remote key-less entry. Now is their definition of remote key-less entry actually having a key fob to unlock/lock the doors? or do they mean something else? When i bought the jeep it didn't have a fob, but being 13 years old I wouldn't be surprised if it was just lost. If it does have it, should i still be able to go to a dealership and have them program a new one for me? Thanks for the help guys.

BTW, here is a copy of the build sheet. Anything else I should be excited to have?

Yes, the system operates with a key FOB. Find one on e-bay or from fellow Jeeper. The dealer has to program it using a scan-tool

If the receiver is kaput lots cheaper to just buy an aftermarket entry/remote start.

There should be a small black plastic dome on the headliner if it has remote keyless entry. At least that is where mine is. Don't expect anything spectacular with range. I have to almost hold my fob to the window to get it to work.

Your 1993 uses the infra-red system (until 96). It must be close to and pointed at the receiver. The good thing is, it can be easily programmed on your own.
The later models do not need the dome and are radio-frequency. These have good range. Must be programmed by dealer.

Except if you're near a radio or television tower. I used to work at a television station where my key fob wouldn't work when I parked at the station. I lived down the mountain from the station, and there was also a dead spot outside my apartment where it wouldn't work. Since it wouldn't work at home and it wouldn't work at work, I thought it was broken until I realized it worked just fine at the mall, grocery store, gentlemen's club, etc.

Yup, if you're lucky you can catch someone parting out a Jeep with the key fob and receiver still intact and just plug it in. The receiver is in the dome light.

Its hidden in the dome light? Not a separate item? What would i look for to see if its still there?

Yes since 1997. It's a separate PCB in the same enclosure. The dome light is just a light socket with a couple wires. It is extremely obvious

Default Universal keyless entry on 1989 XJ

Recently acquired a 1989 Jeep Cherokee and have been doing the standard electrical mods. My XJ had the factory keyless entry, but I have no door keys, keyless entry fobs, and the receiver between the visors had been removed from the overhead enclosure, leaving me with no way to lock my Cherokee. I recently purchased a universal keyless entry unit off of eBay for $13 and will be posting my installation of this unit, tying it in with the factory keyless entry wiring in the overhead receiver location.

Something like $50, and $100 for programming. Depends on your dealership. This is why people say "just go aftermarket"

When I went to the dealer to get a new fob for my 99 they quoted be $139.00 for the remote and $45.00 for programming.

I laughed at them...

I ended up finding a guy selling a matching set on here for $60.00. Got it in the mail, plugged it in and it works perfect to this day.

97-98 had a different remote and should be cheaper. 99-01 had the same remote that WJ's used. They seem to work much better.
