Default Reliability of 2.5 4 cyl Cherokee?

My Brother is thinking about getting a 2.5 4 cylinder Cherokee. He likes the amount of cargo space etc. He drives quite a bit, hence the want for a 4 cylinder. Doesn't want to lift it/no offroading. Just a daily driver (hopefully 4X4). How do these 4 cylinder Jeeps fair? I've never really heard anything about them as far as their reliability etc. For those of you that own one, what do you think/how has it treated you? How are they on fuel?

Ive been told there pretty good running engines as long as there taken care of properly and some can last just as long as 4.0's. Ive never owned one but theres one in my shop class that has 236,467 miles on it and its still running strong if that helps. and for mpgs' im guessing around town 19 or so and on the highway i believe the numbers 25-29 have been tossed around somewhere here on the forum.

i had a 2.5 Wrangler that I put 237k miles on with out one hiccup....freakin thing would see hills from ten miles away...that was my fault as I put 32s on it...but it did get very good mileage...if he keeps it stock height then I say go for it..he should get over 20+mpg in stock form

Thats what I have, I think it's a great engine. My buddy had the 4.0 and he was jealous of my MPG. As for power I am still being amazed at where I can go.

Great, thanks guys. He has a 99 Camaro now. He is a drummer and you could imagine how it's kind of a pita to fit the whole drum kit in the Camaro. haha. That's one of the things I love about Cherokees: cargo room.

Hi, I have a 98 2dr 2.5L, 5 spd as a daily driver for more tha 2 years,,,190,000 and rolling,,the previuos Owner took good care of it,
and I also do it too, so, no leaks no where, everything working properly,,Excelent Gas Millage 20 mpg,
i also make regular trips from Miami to Orlando at averages speeds (75-95),all the way, with no problems, they ride sweet(factory height) on 32,,, thats my 2 cents.

Benefit of the 2.5L - usually meant 4:10 gears stock. Downside, the piece of absolute crap ax-5 tranny that came behind it as the 5spd option. That tranny is worthless, and I despise it.

Had a 2.5, peppy little fella, easier then sin to work on too.

Even though he is only looking for a daily driver. no offroad whatsoever. Don't you think it would be ok?
