so i just got 97 xj and its sitting on 33's i was told it has about 4.5-5.0 in of lift on it. so in the future I'm going to be looking a regearing. i use it as my daily driver. I drive on the highway to work 15 miles each way. will 4.56 to ok or 4.10's be better. i'm starting to do a lot of wheeling.
i've already got an aftermarket trany-cooler installed.
p.s. i got c8.25 in the rear and d-30 in the front

4.56 auto,
4.10 manual

that puts you closest to stock gearing with 33's

i would go:
4.88 auto
4.56 manual

if you do more wheeling or plan to go to a bigger tire in the future

for now i do 80% DD (40%highway) 20% wheeling. i several friends that wheel a lot. but i'm just starting. have my 2nd do in about 3 weeks so won't be to active this year but i want to be ready for when i do go. i do plan on staying with 33's. where is a good place to order kits from? or is there an axel thats already geared to 4.56.
will 4.56 be to much of a strain for DD on my tranny?

it is about $150 for gears per axle, $50-$70 for master instal kit per axle. and you will need a new carrier for the d30.

to have a shop do expect to spend about $1000-$1500 on parts+instal...

unfortunately gears are one of those complicated items to instal in the auto world. You need to have the correct contact patches and preload or you will destroy your axle...

and like i said in my first post 4.56's with an auto will put you closest to stock gearing (225 tire/3.55 gearing=33" tire/4.56 gearing)

I wish you best of luck on your gear instal man!
