Post Regearing with 31's

Hey everyone i know theres like a thousand of these threads however they are all dealing with auto trans however i have a 01 cherokee with a 5 speed and was wondering if i should regear it.I was planning on running a 3.5-4.5 lift with 31's possibly 32's.Its my DD and am looking for some better gas mpg over performance cause i travel mostly highway.

I have a '97 4.0 with 5spd.
I hated 31" tires with the stock 3.07 gearing.
If staying at 31's consider 3.73's or 4.10's for mostly highway driving. I would opt for 4.10's for better crawl.

3.5-4.5" lift is going to be more than enough to fit 33's... at that point I would recommend 4.10's or 4.56's ... again, if 75mph is where your rig spends most of it's time... you may consider the 4.10's...
I run 33's with 4.56's and turn 2500rpm at 70mph... 2800rpm at 75mph... and 3000rpm at 80mph.
I drive 500 miles a week... 450 of that on the highway

31's and 4.10's would be dang near identical to 33's and 4.56's.

This is my favorite gear calculator page... you can compare 2 different setups side by side.

Hope that helps.

You can't go wrong with 4.10s. You technically go with 3.73s and not have to regear your speedo. But if you get a 35 tooth gear from an auto rig it will be perfect for the 4.10s and 31" tires. 4.10s will also be a better ratio for 32s.

nope.
the cherokee 4.0 does not have enough power to pull the higher (numerically lower).
3.07's (stock) in 5th to hit max speed, you'd have to drop to 4th.
With 3.07's an 30's I had to drop to 4th and sometimes 3rd to pull hills on the mountains around here.
With 33's and 4.56's I can run 5th gear no issues...

If you had 5-600hp then 3.07's would give you great top end... but the 4.0 puts about 160hp to the wheels, so, to make it go it needs deeper gearing.

I have 3.55 with 31s and its not bad till you jump in a stock cherokee and relize how much you actually seat of the pants wise with stock gearing. My 89 feels like a rocket ship compared to my 2000 on 31s.

I run 33" tires with a 4.5" lift and 4.10 gears, and I am plenty happy

5spd 4.0

If I was running 31" I would probably only go 3" lift and start with stock gears, go to some 3.55's or 3.73's out of an automatic if it needs it "whole axle swap's".

If you do want to go 33's then go for the 4.10's find a old 4cyl 5spd cherokee with stock 4.10 gears in the dana 30, and get yourself a ford 8.8 out of a ford explorer!

just my opinion.

yeah im on 33s with a 5 speed, stock gearing with 3.07s ofcourse. i want to regear but i just bought a 2nd car so the jeep will be driven only during the snow season when the mustang cant make it anywhere or for wheeling. when wheeling i run 33s, and in 4lo it does fine! but on the road with the 34s, it takes awhile to get up to speed. i dont accelerate fast so it doesnt bother me to much.

but if i had the money, i would love to regear along with getting an sye

I guess it depends on what kind of wheeling you do.
33's with 3.07's in the rocks/technical terrain will be a nightmare and involve plenty of rev's/clutch slip...
Even with 4.56's I went to a 4:1 gear set in the transfer case to keep clutch slip to a min. when running rocks/ledges/crevices.

Typically, $300-$500 per axle depending on shop rates to do the job.
The ring and pinion set themselves will be under/handy $200 (per axle). I guess if you need to buy carriers (depending on ratio you select) the price will increase... I "think" an open carrier goes for around $100.

With a bunch of armor, 2.5" lift and 33's and 4.56's I typically get 20-21mpg on the highway (~70 mph cruise... 2500rpm)...
