When larger tires are installed, the vehicle takes more effort to get them turning. Highway speeds will suffer as will gas mileage. Regearing will regain the power and fuel mileage lost because of those big tires. Are you running on larger tires? If so what size are they and what is your current gear ratio? If you do not know, take a look at the tag on the rear axle. If the tag is missing we can go by the normal standards for each Jeep. Do you have a automatic or standard transmission?

If you want good off road performance 22" rims are not the way to go unless you can run a 44" tire. The rule is that the rim should not exceed half the tire diameter. Off road tires need to flex and they can't do that without adequate side walls. I know they look cool, but they are not for Jeeps.

Generally you can only run 30" tires on stock wheels without rubbing without trimming fenders or lifting. You can go t a 31" on stock wheels with a 3", 33" tires on a 4.5" and mild trimming.

Do you know the size of the tire for the 22"s and what size you are looking for on your winter rims? Knowing the tire size will help get a better idea of the need to regear or not.

Since you have a 4.0 and an automatic, your stock gearing should be 3.55. With a 3 inch lift you can run 31 inch all terrains or mud tires. All terrains would give you a smoother ride and will more than likely have a little better traction in the snow than most mud tires. With a tire that size I don't think a regear would be absolutely neccesary. If you wanted to feel more power from the skinny pedal, then go ahead and have it changed to 4.10 gears.

22's and 40's would be sweet! I know a guy that has 42's on his XJ, but on 15's. Good luck and post pics!

Default tough fit...

fitting 22" rims under a 3" lift is still gonna leave you with really low profile tires and ruined rims, no two ways about it. 17's would be pushing the envelope with something like 245/65R17's but you still might get some rubbing. you might want to come up with an alternate plan in regards to da bling, that's going to be a tough fit!
