Highest priority would probably be oil change, new battery (if it won't take a charge), and set tire pressure. Definitely check all fluids, particularly the coolant.

In addition to above change serpentine belt.
if it were me I'd also change the hoses, or at least buy all of them and carry them and a bunch of water.
It's hot out there.
And take a lot of tools....or money.

I personally would look into renting a U-Haul with a trailer. Yes, it cost money...
But, what's the cost of your new XJ having an issue in Timbuktu, needing to find a mechanic to work on it, waiting on parts, putting yourself up in a hotel room, etc, etc... I at least get AAA beforehand...
