hey there! Newbie to CF. glad to be here
just got my 2001 xj with 117000 miles 4wd it has the d35c rearend.
visually this jeep looks very well taken care of. but ive noticed that when i come to a complete stop and do not creep forward off the brake before i accelerate then the rearend seems to jerk a little.
examples:
1. complete stop and right off the brake to the gas without rolling forward at all i hear it jerk when i take off.
2. complete stop and ease off the brake to let the idle roll the jeep forward prior to getting on the gas it doesnt do it at all. very smooth take off.
ive put the jeep from park to drive to reverse to drive and back and forth numerous times to see if i notice the jerking and i dont notice at all if any.
what could this be?

Also consider the rear brakes - might need a little work.
My 95 had a similar symptom - I thought the read end was gonna fall out!
I replaced everything brake wise on both sides.
All better now.

You could try dropping the rear DS and lubricate the output shaft of the TC with some anti-seize. Mine did kinda the same thing. Quick fix.
Get the rear off the ground and check for play/movement.
Brakes were already suggested.
Maybe something in the tcase or trans.
U joint on its way out.
Lots of things could cause the problem your feeling.
