So it was obvious that my problem was in the boot.
I too have an 01 so age is about the same and I found that the wires in the boot were both cracked and dried out.
I fixed the problem by rewiring all 4 connectors.
I used the solder and heat shrink/tape method and although it was a pain and a fair amount of work it has all come out just fine.
I first tried going the connector route but found that it was too big and cumbersome.
I used a left over trailer wiring harness and some other primary wire for the heavier wires and was able to push it all through the boot.
I redid each connector individually since my spliced wires had repeating colour codes also the trailer wire was easy to push through the boot rather than the individual wires.
I had also had the latch issues with it not wanting to open so it was an all in one back hatch session.
I added a 10-24 nylock nut to the rod for the back hatch and hopefully that will stop a repeat of the issue.
Thanks for the info. I did replace the wires going threw the boot. Mine where cracked but not completely broken. And I still had the same problem so my wiring issue lies somewhere else. But so far my rear wiper is still working with my modification.

But no big deal, you just turn the switch back on and it parks it self right where it belongs. So in my book this problem is as fixed as it is going to get and thanks everyone for there help.
I joined the forum with the specific purpose of thanking @kscha41 for his fix to this problem. After I purchased a new rear wiper motor and found that it did not work either, I did some googling and found this thread.

I bench tested my original motor - which I thought was faulty - and it worked.

I then tested for 12v at the wire harness in the jeep. I had 12v at the brn/lt grn wire. No voltage at the brn/pink wire. So, I spliced the two opposing wires together on the motor harness. I plugged the motor back into the jeep, and viola, I had a wiper again.

Yes, I have to manually stop the wiper when it's in the down position but that's no big deal. WHen I push washer position oo the switch, the wiper and washer work just like they always did.

So, my hat is off to you, kscha41! Thanks

P.S. This fix was on my 2001 Jeep Cherokee Sport.

Glad to hear that my post was able to help you out. I ended up finding the broken wire last year when my brake lights started to act up. The connector for the wiring harness that sits behind the spare tire was corroded and that's what caused my brake light issues and rear wiper issue. So I was able to hook up my rear wiper the correct way and now it works normal.

So even though it clicks it may not be making good contact inside. The ground wire runs back through the same rubber boot to reach the left side of the body behind where the spare tire goes.
I appreciate the exactness of your explanation. I have just the opposite problem. As soon as I turn the key on the wiper starts running. If I push the switch to activate washer fluid the wiper starts moving slowly as if the motor was frozen. Could this be a bad switch? Is there a carling replacement for it?
Thanks for any wisdom.
