My rear wiper starts and stops on it's own with the switch on. It will wipe maybe a 1/4 of the window then stop then maybe 30 seconds later it will wipe the next 1/4. It will do this both ways. I searched on here and really couldn't find someone with the same problem. I was wondering if anyone knows what could be the problem. I took the hatch apart yesterday and every time the wiper moves there is a clicking sound. The motor looks nice and the noise isn't coming from the motor itself. Could someone help me out? Thanks

Could be a number of things but start by checking the terminals for corrosion. If that doesn't resolve the problem see if you can locate the source of the clicking. It may be a relay that is either going bad or has corroded terminals. There should be a serviceability check for your wiper motor in the manual as well. Just because it looks good an the outside doesn't mean its good on the inside. You can disconnect the plugs on the motor, turn the switch on and check for proper voltage for a start point as well.

I checked the service manual for 1998 Cherokee SE. There is a rear wiper module but no relay. There are continuity checks only for the rear motor. The trouble shooting procedure listed in the manual suggests starting at the switch but since you obviously have "some" power to the motor I would check it there. If it has battery voltage at the motor chances are a new rear wiper is in your future.

I have a 96 SE and did check the power to the motor. I'm thinking the module or selinoid is bad which ever I have. The motor only gets power when the wiper is moving. I'm going to have to make a JY run to get one. I was wondering if there is a way to check the selinoid though?

Make sure you post the fix though, it helps in the long run when others have the same problem. At least it's a starting point.
