Default Rear view mirror fell off

In all my years driving and all the vehicles Ive owned (9) Ive never had to put a mirror on. I bought one of those kits at the parts store but Im wondering, there is a clear silicon/rubber "pad" on the metal part that goes on the window. Is that the old glue or is that supposed to be there? The directions say nothing about it. Thanks!

If you can still see the mark on the windshield where it was, draw a rectangle outline on the outside of the windshield with a magic marker. Now scrape the residue off the metal part & windshield, hit both the metal part & the inside of the windshield lightly with some abrasive. Now primer both parts, apply the adhesive to the metal part & stick it inside your mark. Hold for 1 minute or so your done. Remove magic marker with some solvent.

Personally I never had any luck with the glue for the rear view mirror. When my mirror fell off I used just a little JB Weld and it hasn't fallen off in the past 5 years.

Thanks. After reading the instructions like 10 times I figured it was the old glue so I scraped it off and did what it said. It said to let it set up for 15 minutes but Im giving it all night just to be sure. Only other time Ive dealt with this issue was a friends VW in college and he went through like 5 kits with the mirror falling off every couple weeks before taking it into Portland Glass. We'll see if this holds.

I usually wipe the area down with alcohol (cleans any oils), let dry, then
apply the glue. Never had a problem with it falling off.

I knocked into mine one day and knocked it off... just scraped the old glue off with fingernail, cleaned with Windex, and used locrite super glue. Its held good.
