Rear output transfer case question.
So i still have grinding from my 231 Tcase. I pulled my rear drive shaft to start getting to the t case. My splined rear output shaft doesnt have any play up and down or side to side like a bad bearing. But it does side in and out about a 1/4 inch. is that normal or should there be no play? idk if there is a broken lock ring inside...

Yeah ive checked my fluid, it was filled up all the way. ive also checked my linkage and all my U joints. Im no mechanic by any means but im pretty sure it coming for my Tcase. Nobody knows tho if that rear output shaft should have play in and outward?

I may be wrong on this, but a quarter inch in and out play seems normal as the shaft needs to flex a bit when driving to allow for the movement of the axle so things don't bind and break. That is why they use a slip joint in the first place.

hmm i guess im gonna open it up then and look for broken parts. I could be very wrong also, but i hear that clip is a common issue. If i breaks gears can come out of allignment. Its not the slip yoke moving, ive actually pulled that all off with the driveshaft. Its the actual splined shaft from the t case sliding in and out. i dont see why that would need to slide cause thats the point of the slip yoke... Idk haha... like i said not a mechanic at all

I'll have to agree with jeepers and say that some in and out play is normal. But if your sure that the grinding noise is coming from the tcase then open it up and check it out. Cant hurt anything

Transfer case is on its way out. It is from the play in the output shaft. Took me longer than i would like to admit to think to try it with the tcase in N... haha. When i pull the shaft back and spin it no grind. Push it in that 1/4 inch and spin, grinds... Time to open her up!
