Default rear main seal part # for 2000

Hey guys im about to change my rear main seal and was wanting to make sure I have the right part before I get started. Ive read that theres two different types of seals one with wings and one without. Can someone that has done a 2000 model confirm this part number ? http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/p/f...0612/5991587-P

Every one I've seen had wings. But, I've never had a 2000 engine apart.

The oil pan gasket is a good one!!

Well it looks like I might have to grab both and pull the bearing cap to reveal my correct one

I often hear it suggested to have two seals available. First attempt at installing top seal, damages the seal. Some seals have a small plastic pick to assist with installation.

Do you have the discount code for Advance? 'Friend' code is $30 off an $80 purchase (lubricants not included).

Thanks Steve I used code p20 for 20% off and saved $8.00 but I searched everywhere local for the seal without wings and its special order at Auto zone and 2-5 days. So I called the dealership and gave them the part number in the naxja thread and he said it had wings and it was $40.00. So i'm going to try my luck (which sucks) with the wing seal by felpro. I've read of people cutting the wings off with mixed results.

My 2001 FSM does not show the wings. I think most of the changes were between 1999 and 2000 so there is a good chance you need one without the wings. Try to get the anerobic sealer and correct RTV:

Mopar Gasket Maker 4883971AB
Mopar Anerobic 4318083

The 1997 FSM states Loctite 518 or equivalent for the Anerobic. By the 2001 FSM they were only specifying the Mopar brand. Advance sells the equivalent Permatex for about $12.

Over the years the FSM specifies different locations on what to seal and what not to seal. In the 2001 FSM it specifies to put the anerobic directly on the block and bearing cap.

I put dish soap on the outside of the seal and coated the lips and crank with motor oil.

I used a plastic straw cut open and at an angle to act as a shoe horn.

On the oil pan gasket you put RTV where the gasket bends.

No leaks yet.

I just finished this last night. I have a 98 not sure about the wings. Mine had wings. Be very CAREFUL when installing the top half of the seal. I ruined one. I ended up making a shoehorn out of my McDonald's straw. Cut about two inches of straw, cut one end at a 45 and cut the straw down the length. If you don't have a lift good luck getting the pan out it is a royal pita.

I haven't had the ambition to pull the pan on my 01 XJ with the mini-cats yet. Two weeks ago I did the 97 XJ which doesn't have mini-cats. It looks like if you remove the three bolts at the downpipe you might be able to swing the mini-cats far enough out of the way to get the pan out. The other option is to remove the manifold bolts but that is a lot more work. Fel Pro only sells one oil pan gasket to my knowledge. Extra RTV may be needed in some spots in the later XJ's.

When I did my 97, the head was off so I could move the exhaust out of the way pretty easy.

Yeah, I don't see how they will come off with being cut off and punched out. I can say that the more times you do the manifold, the easier those become.

I have a '99 and believe I used the seal with the wings, but I bought both because they were cheap enough. I don't have a lift but have large jack stands. I didn't have to remove the exhaust but it was a tricky getting the pan down. With large jack stands on the "frame" you can drop the suspension enough to get it out. Putting the top seal in, I used a small wooden towel piece to lightly hammer on until it went all the way around. Good luck!
