Default rear main seal

i have an 89 xj 4L I6, and i am replacing the rear main seal. the top half is hardened and wont come out and im trying not to take everything apart.
any suggestions???

Take a small punch and tap it out til you can get some needle nose on it then pull it out.Be careful not to mar and gouge the surface around it.

Make sure your attempting to drive it out by placing the drift on the metal ring inside the seal.. not against rubber.

If that doesnt work you can loosen up the rest of the bearing caps to get pressure off it. Make sure you use a torque wrench to retighten everything.
