I've got a 96 Cherokee with a Chrysler 8.25 rear. I just changed axle bearings and spider gears trying to get rid of a whine. When I had it apart I noticed the caps on the carrier bearings were loose. I've only rebuilt GM rears before so when I saw the adjustable shim I was lost. I made a tool to tighten the shim, checked backlash by feel, and reinstalled the bearing caps. The rear still makes noise. I bought new carrier bearings today. Can I drive them off with a hammer? Can I put the new ones on with a hammer?

 

No, you'll need to either use a bering puller or cut them off with a Dremel.

There are are very specific operations that must be done in order to establish the correct backlash and carrier bearing preload. Of ourse it going to whine...JEEBUS!

 

Thats why I'd like to put in new carrier bearings and set it up right. Even though the carrier was loose the ring and pinion look OK. Can you give me a setup procedure?
