Default Rear hatch loose when closed

When the lid is closed and latched, I can move it back and forth about 1/4 inch with the latch engaged. Problem is that if I let it close on its own, it latches but bounces back, still latched, and the interior light stays on. Any idea how to adjust it so it closes tighter? Maybe it's a bump stop issue?

Jeep is new to me so I don't know what the "gap" should look like. Seems like it should be an easy fix but I just don't know where to begin or if this is a common issue.

Oh, no rust, latch is lubed well, and the hatch did just get a dent knocked out and repainted before I bought it so maybe they didn't adjust it properly if the took it off to paint. Taking it to the shop isn't an option, far away and I didn't have it done.

Are your snubbers worn out? The little black bumpers on either side. They just pull off. Mine were worn out.

Yeah they're looking pretty tired. I messed with them a little and it seemed to fix the issue. Maybe I'll try and replace them with new ones for a permanent fix. I'm guessing most of the rubber bushings are showing age by now.

Mine, you can loosen the bracket with the pin and move it (in). Also you can turn it around if it has a groove worn in it from the latch. (It also moves left and right) Yea, should have rubber stops on the hatch just below where the ram's attach.
