you better get a new Cherokeeforum sticker now... ha
yeah i look like a crazy person when i try to open the rear "door" ... I found that pushing in and then pulling the handle simultaneously (woah no spell check here) works... but i'm usually cussing up a blue streak by the 5-6 try...

I was having the same problem on my 98, got the panel off an got down in there, an wound up having to pop the bar out an pull it up an then reattach it. However now I am having a slightly different issues that being that the sensor isn't registering when it closes an locks.
The catch at the base is really loose an you can actually pick it up n pull it straight out as if its not bolted to anything Any ideas?

Thank you for this post. That hatch has been pissing me off for about a month now. This is really the worst design ever. My YJ had the same set up in the doors and my stupid driver door always had problems!!

Periodic cleaning and lubrication of this mechanism and in door mechanisms will help to prevent such problems.
They get dirty and the lube origianlly puts on collects the dirt, they begin to get stiff at the same time those plastic clips tend to get brittle and break.
I recently bought a 95 and 96 and I know if I do not clean and lubricate the door and hatch locks and mechanisms I am asking for trouble.
One has manual windows and they were stiff. We opened up that door and removed all the caked on dirt/grease and replaced it with new clean grease and it opens and closes better than when it was new.
I think door mechanisms are one of the most overlooked parts of a vehicle.
Oh and when you clean/service yours .... install new plastic clips as well.

While we're on this subject, when my hatch lifters failed a couple of years back, I used a mop handle to keep from bonking my head on the lid.
Worked great, but it eventually busted the defroster clip off of the back window. Not a bright idea to use that as a backstop.
How to reattach it? Looks like it was originally attached via some sort of JB Weld-like substance. I'm in Boston, so it would be nice to have a rear defroster again.

Got mine done. Basically the same issue. I ended up tightening it up on the screw arm too much and then the door would not latch. Once I got it in the right spot, I screwed a nut down on the threaded arm so that it could not slip anymore.
