Default rear hatch

I have the fiberglass hatch and was wondering if they made a steel one I could swap it to? And the speakers in the rear always sound like crap no matter what I put in there is it because of the hatch and any ideas of a better place to put them to sound better?

if you don't have a rear speaker bar then i'd nab one out of another XJ that does (years 92-97/8??) not sure on what year they started putting them in the xj's but they're removable... the 98/99s and newer have a speaker bar fully molded in the headliner so you would need to swap the whole headliner rather than just installing a speaker bar itself.

as far at the hatch, your basically stuck with fiberglass. The 97's+ use a steel hatch but the body lines and outlines for the taillights don't match.. i suppose you could maybe mount the newer steel hatch and then make your own steel rear tailight housings to better match the body line

If you want to relocate speakers some later models came with a rear overhead box that housed two 4x4 speakers.

Later years , I believe 99-01, had a steel hatch. As far as bolting right up in couldn't tell you. The later models do have much more rounded bodies though, it may look out of place if you manage to bolt it up.
