Default Rear gate catch issue

Aight, so I was having problems with not being able to open my rear gate (got that fixed thanks to anouther thread on here ). However now there is another issue.

When you close the gate, the sensor says its still ajar. I am thinking it is reading it because the catch on the cargo area is loose. An I don't mean alil wobble, I mean you can pull it straight up an out of the holes... See pics below.

I took the screws out in order to move that plate an check it out, an to me it looks like they have the wrong setup in it anyway! Just because the shape doesn't match but just could me bein silly.
Any ideas?
If needed I can grab a pic without the plate in to show that theres nothing there.

Looks to me like there's supposed to be nuts up under that. I'll have to look under mine and see if there's a way to get to them, if someone else doesn't have your answer already

yup, you're missing some nuts, bring the part with the studs to you're favorite parts store or hardware store and get some nuts and lock washers.

I just took a look, the nuts can be installed from under and infront of the bumper though you'll need about 12" (maybe more) extension on your deep well socket

The switch/sensor appears to be part of the moveable latch in the liftgate. If the moveable latch does not engage the stationary latch (striker) completly the 'hatch open light' will stay lite. You may be missing shims under the stationary latch. The moveable latch can also be adjusted up or down (in/out) by loosening the Torx bolts. You could try washers under the stationary latch untill you can get to the dealership if you are missing the shims under the striker. Your first photo is not showing any shims. If you can not open the liftgate without using the latch handle and the light stays on then the switch may be bad.
shims shown at the bottom of this parts foto. #s 59 & 60

aight so apparently its still not catching right, perhaps its sliding back when the gate makes contact i dunno. I am gon alook into gettin a new one but the sensor stayed on, however i took it out an pushed it into the latch itself an held it there while a friend checked the light, an sure enough it went off. now comes the fun part in finding said part lol.

Thanks DaddyCat for your help .

You are welcome. If the shims are missing the striker may not be tall enough for the latch to grab. re the striker sliding back, that should not move if the nuts are tight. A new striker may not solve the problem if the missing shims are causing the problem. You didn't say if the shims are present and under the striker. I belive jeep calls the shims "striker plates"
I'm sure the dealership will understand what you need. Untill then you can try 2-3 washers under the striker.
