Default Rear drum brake to disk brake

I am thinking of swapping my rear drum breaks for disk breaks. Has anyone done this, is it advisable and how complicated is the process. Anything special required aside from a disk break kit?

Any ideas thoughts suggestions?

I did the Teraflex conversion on my 1998 with the 8.25 rear end. Had some help but I've been very happy with it. I did a junkyard swap with an Explorer on another jeep a few years ago and ran into all the classic issues - e brake being the main one. If you order from Quadratec be careful, I ended up having to go to back to TF and exchange the brake lines and brackets because (per TF) QT has outdated and incorrect part numbers for many of their products.

You will have to pull the shafts, be prepared to rebuild your axles while in there, seals and such. If you are looking at re-gearing or other diff work, it's a good time to do it. I ran new brakes from the master cylinder to the wheels all around, hard lines, flex lines, calipers, backing shields, pads/rotors, etc for around $1200 in parts.

Very ironic you mention this because our new issue, due out next week, covers this very subject on a Jeep TJ but can be utilized on the XJ. Basically the process is relatively easy and can be done several ways. Teraflex offers a great kit as does Crown Automotive. You can also go to the junk-yard and see what is there and save money that way.

Check out the new issue of JPFreek Adventure Magazine for more info next week.

And here's a tip on how to run the e-brake lever without looping it. It works better. You don't have a sloppy spring this way.

Timely post! I'm thinking about the same conversion on my '93... Thanks for the info and links!

Cheers.
