Default rear dome light question.

My rear dome light has a push button. Is it supposed to do anything?

On my "99" it works as a manual on/off but if I leave it on the lights turn on/off with the hatch open/close

That's what I thought. My original one didn't click so I got one from the junk yard that clicks and seemed to work but it still doesn't do anything at all

I use mine for when i have the tailgate open for a long time (tailgating/working on another truck). When u open the hatch and the light comes on you can manually turn the light off so u dont burn your battery. You cant use it to turn the rear light on when the hatch is shut for whatever reason thats just how they made it i guess.

The light in my 95 never worked either... suspected it was a switch or something... I didn't own it long enough to fix it though

Mine didn't work either when I got it, turns out the switch was rusted completely off. The switch is located on the latch mechanism inside the hatch, couple screws takes it off so you can access it.

Apparently they were optional on the '92 Sport. Found some vacant screw holes, and two wire ends taped to the harness.
