lucky you. Make sure you dont make a mess with diff fluid it stinks like hell and the smell lingers forever

And its a good time to paint the cover too.

Yep, top off the fluid now, and pull the cover off when you can, spray everything down unside with carb cleaner or brake cleaner, let it all drain out and dry out(may be necessary to sop up a little bit of cleaner with a rag at the very bottom inside the diff housing), paint the diff cover, RTV, and bolt up. By the way Ive had better luck with just using RTV. Ive used the Victor/Reinz paper gaskets with RTV, but had better luck using just RTV. PermaTex 1 Minute RTV at AUTOZONE works very well.

come from the factory with RTV, you dont need a gasket.

Its extra protection for the people that really really like to do things 110%

red rtv, it will last for thousands of miles

You'll burn up the bearings.

It would be pretty silly to run low on oil considering all you have to do is pull a plug and squirt stuff in there

Bump. Going to tackle this job in an hour or so. Any on prefer any certain fluid? And what is it called? just gear oil? this job I have never done before and am clueless.

I want to do the front as well while I'm down there. Anything different with that one?

I use the least expensive brand that has an API seal on it. 70-90 is fine

I went with Mobil 1 70-90..I like synthetic gear oils mainly for the extended service intervals.
